Happy Canada Day!
Since it’s Canada Day, I thought I’d let you in on a little secret! You probably already know that most of the fashions you will find at Silhouette Fashion Boutique are Canadian made. Shoppers often tell us how much they appreciate that fact.
But here’s the thing – YES, we are mostly Canadian made – but in the beginning, Silhouette didn’t carry mostly Canadian because we had an altruistic idea about Canadian goods; in fact, we didn’t carry a lot of Canadian made fashions at all. But it didn’t take long for us to learn a valuable lesson.
On my first buying trip, about 6 years ago, I bought clothes I believed my customers would like – just that simple. I didn’t take into account that Small, Medium & Large made offshore is probably not what most Canadian women consider Small, Medium & Large.
Back then, I was 5’7” and 125 pounds soaking wet and in that first season, I was thrilled to unpack my very first shipment of gorgeous clothes, but pretty soon, the thrill was gone! I couldn’t fit into most the clothes I’d ordered – not even the Extra Larges! Then I noticed that the quality was not as good as I’d expected. Lesson learned.
The very next season, we focused on Canadian made fashions. And it’s been that way ever since. Today, 20 pounds heavier, I fit into a Canadian made Small or Medium, depending on the style or the designer. Canadian lines tend to be a generous fit and most offer plus sizes to 3X.
Of course, price is always a concern, but we quickly learned that quality Canadian made fashions are not more expensive than quality clothes made off shore. (I’ll talk about the difference in the cost of fashions in an upcoming blog post).
It's true that not everything in our boutique is Canadian made (I'll discuss why that is in another blog post, too) but if it's not actually made in Canada, it is Canadian designed and purchased from a Canadian company!
So confession … originally, we just wanted nice fashions to offer our customers. Today, we still want that! – but we also want to know that our clothes are made in a safe working environment where employees are making a reasonable wage – and that the clothes will fit!
Happy Canada Day.
We are so blessed to live in this beautiful country!
